Burns Night Supper and Ceilidh, 2011

 The Gathering

This past Saturday evening at 7pm SLT, many of us from throughout the Steamlands came together in the great hall of Caisteal Teanacadh on Isle of Skye to celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns, The Bard of Scotland.  (I shared some historical information on Robert Burns and this evening tradition in my previous post in the blog.)

What a joyful and meaningful time it was.  The castle was filled with the laughter of friends and neighbors.

I greeted my guests along with Lady Rowan Derryth (l), my co-host for the night,
and Boyarina Kate Nicholas

Jarl Otenth Paderborn provided the very fine music for the evening.

Once the guests were seated, the program began.  First a welcome speech, then a reading of the Selkirk Grace selected by Otenth Paderborn.

Lady Kate paraded the haggis for the assembled guests as the pipes played and Victor1st Mornington recited (via recording) the Ode to a Haggis, as is the tradition.

After we raised a glass of whisky to toast the haggis, we sat down to enjoy our meal and each other's company.

At this point in the ceremony, I asked that all guests join me in the Immortal Memory of Mr. Robert Burns:
Seneschal, My Lords and My Ladies, Ladies and Gentlemen.  Please join with me as I toast the memory of Scotland's National Poet and the person whose life and accomplishments we celebrate tonight.

Many thousands of Scots around the world celebrate Burns night on his birthday, January 25th.  It is perhaps extraordinary that there is a Burns Supper at all.  Why do Scots the world over participate in  "Burns Supper" to perpetuate the memory of their National Poet?  Why do not other groups gather annually to celebrate the memory of the famous writers of their nations?  Why for example is there no Dickens Dinner, Tolstoy Tea, Shakespeare Roast, or Balzac Barbecue -- or some other such event?
It would be presumptuous to assert the answers to these questions.  But, perhaps by reflecting on Robert Burns and his life we can discover some of our reasons for celebrating his memory tonight.
Had Robert Burns lived today, his earnings from one song alone -- Auld Lang Syne -- would have made him a multi-millionaire on a par with writers as Irving Berlin and George Gershwin and performers such as Elvis Presley and Paul McCartney.  Yet, when he died in 1796, aged thirty-seven, he was poor and asking financial help of acquaintances.  So what was it then about the life of this fellow, born into a poor farming family and departed in poverty that brings Scots together each year to celebrate his memory?

Perhaps he was a Scottish "Everyman." Perhaps his writing spoke to the basic emotions, thoughts, desires and fears of every person regardless of nation or rank.  People frequently attribute certain traits to the Scottish character.  Primary among them are a down-to-earthness, a plain-ness, a directness, a fierecely independent spirit, and a common touch.  Perhaps these traits have more universal appeal than is often appreciated.  It is not possible to do justice to Robert Burns character in the time allotted.  Perhaps a few examples of his character, as seen in his poetry, will do.

Burns loved people despite their weaknesses, but hated hypocrisy.

One biographer stated that the Reformer, John Knox, had more in common with Burns than with the stereotype we have of Knox today.  He stated that Burns and Knox were desperate men of crisis who played their parts in opposition to false or abused authority.  Burns' biographer wrote that had Knox seen the abuses of the Church at the time of Burns, he would have allied himself with Burns against the established Church and many of its pillars of the community.
In the poem, Holy Willie's Prayer, Burns pointed his barbed wit at a self-righteous, member of the congregation as an example of the kind of hypocrisy that can poison any institution.  Holy Willie, by his own complaints and by church standards, is shown to be an example of what to avoid.  He enumerates his own misdeeds, mentioning some of them by their first names and frequency in the week.

Burns was opposed to anyone being treated in a servile manner.

Robert Burns addressed his hatred of slavery in a poem, The Slave's Lament:

"It was in sweet Senegal

That my foes did me enthral

For the lands of Virginia, 'ginia, O!

Torn from that lovely shore

And must never see it more
and alas! I am weary, weary, O!
"The burden I must bear,

While the cruel scourge I fear,
In the lands of Virginia, 'ginia, O!

With the bitter, bitter tear,

And alas! I am weary, weary, O!"

Burns loved Liberty.

Robert Burns wrote of himself: "The first two books I ever read in private, and which gave me more pleasure than any two books I ever read again, were The Life of Hannibal and the History of Sir William Wallace.  Hannibal gave my young ideas such a turn that I used to strut in raptures up and down after the recruiting drum and bag-pipe, and wish myself tall enough that I might be a soldier; while the story of Wallace poured a Scottish prejudice in my veins which will boil along there Ôtill the floodgates of life shut in eternal rest."

Burns disliked superstition as a means by which people enslave themselves.  However, he drew upon the rich lore of Scotland and its legends and fairly tales to produce symbolism in his poetry.

Burns loved learning.

A Burns biographer once wrote that it "was parish gossip that, if you called on William Burness at meal-time, you found the whole family with a book in one hand and a horn spoon in the other."
Burns inherited his parents love of learning, a yearning that helped him to keep an open mind about himself, his Maker, acquaintances, and his surroundings.

The traits that seem to mark Burns' character all point back to the inescapable fact that he was a Scot.
The stereotype of the Scotsman, thanks largely to Sir Walter Scott and Sir Harry Lauder, is a fellow wearing highland attire.  In his life, Burns certainly did not fit that stereotype at all.  From reading his poems we gain the picture of a lowland Scot who dressed "English" according to the style of a farmer.  The book which contained most of Burns' poems, titled Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, made a favorable impression on the literati of Edinburgh.  I suppose we would call the literary critics of the time "Liberals" today.  They found their theories about the sensitivity of the common man confirmed by what they called this "ploughman poet." Burns spent the winters of 1786-87 and 1787-88 in Edinburgh as a national celebrity, but he disliked the condescension with which he was treated and so returned to farming.

No, Burns did not fit the stereotype of the Highlander in his own life or in the image he projected to literary society.  However, it is interesting to note that he penned at least one poem to sing of a displaced Scot:

"My heart's in the Highlands,
my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,
A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go!
"Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birthplace of valour, the country of worth!

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands forever I love."

We now toast Robert Burns! Lover of people, lover of freedom and liberty, lover of truth, lover of learning, a lowland farmer, a Highlander at heart, a Scot.

To Robert Burns!

PJ gives us a toast to the Lassies

Mr. Trenton has graciously supplied the words of his toast on his blog, Virtually PJ

Miss Rowan Derryth Speaks
Lady Rowan Derryth responded (quite energetically) with a toast to the lads.

Lady Rowan has shared her witty words and recitations on her blog, I Derryth.

Several other toasts followed as the crowd got into the spirit of things  -  and after the spirits got into them a bit more.  :)

As always, following the toasts, readings of Mr. Burns' works were provided.  Lady Gabrielle, Lady Rowan, Miss Homewood, and several others shared their favorite pieces with us.  Truly is was a joyful night as we listened to our friends recite and toast utilizing either voice or text (or both) in celebration of the Bard.

Lady Gabrielle ended the formal portion of the evening by reading the Grace After Supper.
To the ballroom and let the ceilidh begin!!

Even George came out to dance.
Jed Dagger dips me as the Pipers of Skye assemble

I will complete this post by simply saying that by the end of the night, my feet were bare, my hair completely loose, and my heart happy.  Thank you again for allowing me to celebrate this joyous night with you.

"The Hills are alive with the sound of music? I love it. " ~The Narcoleptic Argentinean

Well the Isle of Skye was certainly alive on February 27th - alive with music, but also alive with the many and diverse persons present for the event celebrating the film, Moulin Rouge.

The event was themed on the Baz Luhrmann film and was fantastically well attended and incredibly interactive and fun. The build was phenomenal thanks to my co-creators, Lady Kate Nicholas (who worked diligently with me to set most of the scene) and Mr. Iason Hassanov (for the Eiffel Tower). DJ Icarus Ghost blew everyone away with his remarkable playlist which included many original tracks (the inspiration for the movie soundtrack).

Pictures being worth thousands, I will share with you the evidence of a great event. Let's do it again sometime, 'k?

Oh sure! Fill Your Grand Ballroom With Snow.......

And suddenly a group of walruses decide to move in!!

Thankfully, as a professor with The Royal Society, I could call their resources and experts immediately.

Dr. Nicholas happily took charge of the situation, performed some biological measurements, tagged the animals and called in the Society's research vessel to take these fine creatures to a more suitable habitat.

The large alpha male of the group happily gobbled up some of Steelhead's finest salmon.

MANY YEARS!

MANY YEARS!

Kate has taught me that "many years" is a traditional blessing that is given at the end of each Sunday service to those in her local Orthodox congregation who are celebrating birthdays. As I began thinking about writing this piece on our 3rd Rez Day celebration, I thought this was just the perfect thing to say avatars in SL. There are at least two reasons.

1)the desire to wish the person behind the avatar well, expressing the hope that their avatar will remain and flourish for years to come.
and 2) the recognition that every year in real life equals 6 years in SL. (Many years indeed.)

It felt good and right that Kate and I would celebrate our Rez Days together this year since we met on my very first day in world and have been fast friends ever since that time. Her real life has kept her out of SL a lot over the last year or so, but we do try our best to spend time together in world when the chance arises, plotting and planning good things for the Royal Society, or exploring, or simply just catching up.

There have certainly been times in the last 3 years that I have seriously considered giving Second Life up all together. I need not recount the reasons or dramas here, but I will say that there have been many lessons-learned.

What has kept me here?
Good friends are the first and foremost reason.

The outlet for creativity - expressed both in world and in this blog as well as others. The sheer joy of discovery that happens when one goes, for instance to visit AM Radio and his latest work of art.

The humor and silliness that can also happen are truly draws as well. It's good to be able to let one's hair down at times and just laugh and play.

I should also say that as someone who's human works full time in her professional field and is raising two fabulous children that one should not diminish the feeling of stress relief that can be gained by a friendly (or not so friendly) match on the tournament sands, the fencing piste, or behind the cannon of an ironclad. :) Sometimes you just can't top battles or blowing things up!

The STEAMY party itself was great fun! Thanks to all of you who attended. We went an hour over the scheduled time because we were all just having too much fun for it to end. And during that time as people came and went, we maintained about 35 or so guests. The dancing and conversation were fabulous, and the music provided by Gabrielle Riel was perfect! Once again, my dear cousin created a play list for us that was spot on.

Thanks also for all the good thoughts and well wishes; for presents and private notes. I will cherish these things - and do.

Much love & many years, my friends!

Pray DO Save the Date - May 28th 6:30p-9:30p SLT

Far more details to follow, my friends. Far more. But here, at least, is the basic invitation.

Kate Nicholas and I look forward to hosting you this time as we celebrate 3 years on the grid. Our theme is STEAMY. So begin to think Steampunk (obviously), burlesque (likely), and hot (definitely). Everyone is welcome! Join in the fun of the theme or come as you are.

And yes, I know that the place for the party is not yet announced. Those details are under tight security at the moment. :) I will let you know.

Looking forward to having fun with you next Sunday!!

Proceedings of the Royal Society: 200+ years ago in the real Proceedings

Proceedings of the Royal Society: 200+ years ago in the real Proceedings

Imagine the pleasure I found this morning when, sitting in the library of my newly restored castle in Isle of Skye, Winterfell Anodyne (that's a whole other diary entry in and of itself), I picked up the post and found a letter and package from Lady Kate with some very old issues of the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Great Britain. I am sure that my weekend will now be spent here among my books despite the long list of things to be accomplished otherwise.

She mentions with particular interest several articles on metallurgy. I find my curiosity is piqued a bit here since my intelligence sources from around the Independent State have been abuzz with snippets of information about a secret cadre of Caledonians who have been traveling the oceans to an inhabited island.

It is said that this group have been studying minerals and metals as well as the different ecosystems found in the new land. Knowing Lady Kate, she is in the thick of things. I shall have to call upon her at some length to discuss what, if anything, she knows about the intentions of this company of explorers.

I have a suspicion that there is a connection with the mysterious floating platforms high above Oxbridge, and the increase in production of Clanks in that region - as well as the noted general increase in flora and fauna.

St. Kitts Safe???

Kate Nicholas
Boyarina, Winterfell Eventide
12 August

Dear Kate-
I sit here in my makeshift offices while abroad on holiday staring at a letter that has just been delivered by special courier from my cousin, Gabrielle. It is an invitation to make sure that I am able to join our Benevolent Dictator for Life, Desmond, in St. Kitts this coming Monday for a beach party. ???

She says that he had an external consultant review the stability and safety of the island, and that it has been declared entirely safe. My word, Kate! How is that possible? When last we took measurements on the island, the geologic patterns suggested entirely the opposite as I recall.

I fear that St. Kitts is entirely UN-safe. This could prove to be a disaster of epic proportions if Desmond's "experts" are wrong.

The courier has awaited my response to Gabi, which I have written expressing my fears, and that same gentleman is to deliver this to you. I am cutting my holiday short, and am having my things packed post-haste to join you as soon as is possible. I suggest that we must gather more seismic and geologic data as soon as possible for review by the Guvnah.

I am, as ever, your dear friend and colleague~

Ah....The Mountains!

Everyone needs a little holiday every now and then. So once the Snowflake Ball and the Burns Night events were done, I determined that I should get away for a little while and take a holiday. Rather than searching for warmer climates, I decided to take advantage of the cold and head to the mountains where I might find even cooler, more crisp air. And SNOW! I do love to ski.

Thankfully, the last minute details of ensuring that Loch Avie is cared for, and that the distillery, MI5, and the Academy training grounds are monitored came together quite nicely. Lady Kate Nicholas has volunteered to mind the distillery for me as well as tend to the day-to-day needs of Nellie and the Loch. She has been working on a water pumping and filtration system for the distillery anyway, so this seemed like not too much of an imposition on her.

Colonel Somme with his new Lancers riding gear.

Colonel Somme, Commanding Officer of the Caledon First Lancers, came by to offer his assistance, and I was pleased to take him up on it. He and Lt. Colonel O'Toole will assist by having the Lancers patrol the Loch on a little more frequent basis, and will ensure - along with Sir Telemachus - that the Academy training grounds are safe and maintained. I also have made arrangements with a few of my operatives to keep MI5 running smoothly in my absence.

Once I completed the details with Lady Kate and Colonel Somme, I had a little time to make my rounds and to wait on the water taxi, which would ferry me to the waiting airship.

I truly look forward to my time in the mountains. The beauty of them renews my soul as does that first run in the morning. That run in which my skis make the first tracks in the virgin snow, and all that may be heard is the schooshing of my skis, the soft falling of snow, and the sounds of nature.

a skiing poem by Jim Vaughn

The landscape, surrounded by whispers of snow, and the occasional glimmer of dancing sunlight, as it kisses the clouds.

Standing before me, beckoning me, like the siren’s call, of the ancient mariner.

Drawing me out, upon the steep pitch, coaxing me ever closer to the abyss of pleasure.

I ascend into the chute, careening like a bowling ball, thrown downward, bouncing, picking up speed by the second.

I stick my pole, deep into the virgin snow, which had yet to be tracked that day.

Feeling it sink, then suddenly take hold, I turn, and before my eyes, is the euphoric rush, of seeing nothing but the trees, entrenched into the rock wall, like centurions poised to repel attack.

The ski’s under my feet become weightless, I hang ever so delicately, in the sweet embrace of gravity.

I feel the air rushing around me, the kaleidoscope of colors, that once, was the rock wall, flashes by.

My eyes begin to focus, forever it seems, I’m free of the restraints that bind me to the earth.

Abruptly, my descent stops, jarred back into reality, my legs start pumping again, I slide into the next turn, and start the whole process over again.

Sometimes One Just Needs To Leave The Work

Even as the preparations for the Burns Supper are all coming together - and hard work still ahead - sometimes it's just good to heed the call of a friend who says, "You MUST come see this."

Such was the call I received from Lady Kate last night. She had been exploring in the mainland fairly near Sir Adso's latest property, and came across a beautiful and fun set of Protected Land Sims. She and I do share a winter-time passion: skiing. So that was all she had to say when I responded to her initial call. "There is skiing! Skiing across three sims!"

She was unfortunately not able to stay in world for too long once I arrived in the sim, but she did show me the slope and took a run or two downhill with me.

Near the bottom of the run

Well lit even for night-time skiing

I made the run a number of times. The whole of the experience is gorgeous and fun, unfortunately the lift does not actually work. Working "magic chairs" (as my typist's children call them) would have made the experience nearly perfect. The Lindens do provide free skis and poles (no scripting), and the ski animation which takes you all the way to the lake at the bottom of the run.

After skiing several times, I flew around for a little while finding not only beautiful vistas, but also a sledding run. Wheeeeee!

Double Black Diamond Sledding Hill????
w00t!

Just the break I needed.....

Now back to the planning and preparation for Burns Night with renewed vim and vigor. The cold air, and exertion of sport does wonders for the mental health of your Duchess.

Sláinte!!
